The history
Every 10 years since 1634, the village of Oberammergau in Germany has hosted their passion play, as part of a vow the villagers made to god almost 400 years ago.
In the midst of the Thirty Years’ War and with Oberammergau suffering from plague, villagers vowed that if god spared them they would produce a play once every 10 years to honor the life and death of Jesus.
After the vow was made, no other villagers contracted the plague and those who already had it recovered. The villagers then started the tradition of the Passion play, staging a performance on Whitsun in 1634 in the village’s graveyard.
Over the years the play has been produced 42 times, with people from across the world, including many world leaders watching the numerous performances in each year of its staging.
The production
The play is produced by people born in Oberammergau or those who have lived there for 20 years or more. Over 2,000 actors, musicians, producers, stage hands and other performers will work on the 2020 passion play, which is due to have more than 100 performances to more than 500,000 visitors.
Devotion to the play by those involved is clear to see, with men who will be onstage not shaving or cutting their hair in the year before the play in order to gain an authentic biblical look.
